Symantec Releases Security Threat Report

icon-warning April 2008 marks Symantec’s release of their latest Global Internet Security Report covering trends for July 2007 to December 2007. It includes analysis of network-based attacks, a review of known vulnerabilities, and highlights of malicious code. It also assesses trends in phishing and spam activity.

Highlights of interest to IT professionals include:

  • Theft or loss of computer or data storage was the cause of most data breaches that could lead to identity theft.
  • Microsoft had the shortest patch development time. Sun had the longest.
  • Eighty-eight vulnerabilities that affected enterprise vendors in the second half of 2007 remained unpatched at the end of the reporting period.
  • Threats to confidential information made up 68 percent of the volume of the top 50 potential malicious code infections.
  • During the period the report covers spam made up 71 percent of all email traffic monitored at the gateway.
