5 Tips to Get Yourself Promoted

By Sam Grier

case-and-ladder Is your IT career not moving as quickly as you would like? Do you feel like you have been passed over for promotion? If so examine where you are now and where you want to be. Take control of your career by preparing yourself to succeed.  Consider these options for improving your chances of promotion.

  1. Education and Certifications
One of the most obvious ways to give your IT career a boost is to improve your education. Show the company that you are seeking to improve yourself in areas that are critical to the company. You should choose specialized training or certifications in the area you are interested in. Problem solving skills and leadership skills are of great value. The more current your skill set and comprehensive your certifications, the more likely you will be able to move up the ladder.
  2. Networking
If you are unsure about what IT path you want to take talk to those who currently work in areas that interest you.  Find out what they do and what skills are required. Networking also gives you exposure to managers and associates in those areas. When positions become available you will find out about them and those looking to hire will remember your interest.
  3. Learn about your company and IT organization
A good understanding of your company, how it operates and how the various departments within it operate is vital information. It will show you have a broad knowledge of the company and your input will be more informed. Know the structure of your IT department. Who are the main players are and what their agendas are? While you may not want to risk getting into the political mix, knowing the roles of the people in charge of the various departments will give you a valuable overview of the IT organization.
  4. Be professional in everything you do
Proper dress attire is important even on casual work days. You must look the part. Conduct yourself with a positive attitude towards your job and your co-workers. Don’t whine or complain when things are tough. Suck it up and show you have the ability to overcome challenges. This shows you can be counted on when things get tough. Let yourself be known as a team player and willing to help others. Have a strong work ethic and show that you can go the extra mile when the task requires it.
  5. YOU are the key
How far you go and how fast you get there has more to do with your drive and work ethic than anything else. Don’t sit around waiting to be the next in line. Seniority does not mean you are going to move up. Be pro-active  when it comes to your career. Show you have the passion and drive to make a valuable contribution to your company.

Your future is in your hands. Don’t sit and wait for opportunity to come to you. Instead do everything you can to prepare yourself so when opportunity does come you are prepared to be the right person for the job.

Promotion is never impossible if we have the drive and right attitude for it. Before we do all sorts of things to help us get that promotion, we must always have that drive within us. Infinite drive that would continuously push us to strive harder and harder despite all obstacles accompanied with the right attitude towards our goal, we can never go wrong.
